Opened three years ago, this welcoming coastal lodge and vineyard near Matakana, 40 minutes north of Auckland, rests in the heart of on of New Zealand's burgeoning regional getaways. Once a sleepy backwater, Matakana has become renowned for, among other things, its cuisine and fine wine. In that respect, Takatu Lodge promotes the Slow Food Movement, where the emphasis is on locally produced ingredients that go into creating tasty breakfasts. Elsewhere, you'll find a veritable smorgasbord of fine cafes and restaurants, all within a short distance.
Matakana, well know for its Saturday morning Farmers' Market, has become a hub for arts and crafts, together with new vineyards and cafes. Takatu Lodge lies 3km from the village on the Takatu Peninsula. Each of the four suites - with super-king beds and generous ensuites - come with a pastoral panorama and sea views. The vineyard was planted 10 years ago according to the principles of sustainable viticulture. Pinot Gris, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec are the main varieties here. Takatu wines have been acclaimed by critics and are sold to a host of restaurants and lodges including, Huka Lodge and Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand and Ledbury and The Provodores restaurants in London. Takatu Lodge is a stop along the Matakana Coast Wine Trail.
