Crafted to Perfection

Situated on a north-facing hill just above Matakana Village, this charming vineyard is perfectly sheltered from the cool southwesterly winds and the summer sun is cooled by the Pacific breeze. Owned and run by Heather and John Forsman, Takatu literally translates as ‘well-prepared' and their motto of ‘fruit of the vine work of human hands' is an ethos that they take very seriously. Wine-making has seen the realisation of a life-long passion and dream.

"The mainstream winemakers do a fantastic job," says John. "There's a lot of chemistry involved, but we don't have to play by the rules. If there's a funkiness involved, we celebrate that as long as it's not a fault. It can often be difficult to get it absolutely right on the vines. This year has been exceedingly difficult - we were down 20 per cent in sunlight hours."
