Robert Rakete jumps at a chance to take a break in Matakana, and discovers pure kiwi hospitality in a luxury setting.
Takatu Lodge suits its name (Takatu [Maori]: well prepared/plentiful), with exquisite food & wine on hand & wide open spaces that still allow you to find a cosy corner to curl up with a book & a glass or two. It has four beautifully appointed suites that offer privacy for those couples wanting time alone, and a large lounge & fireplace for guests keen to join Heather & John for wine-tasting.
...Heather's love of local produce is evident across all her dishes. The Saturday morning Farmers Market is a must-see; delicious treats from the small market stalls make their way to platters at Takatu that evening or at Sunday breakfast. Heather also serves as a great ambassador for the area, recommending wonderful beach retreats as well as offering restaurant suggestions for dinner. ...For me, relaxing on the balcony while looking down on rows of vines & an outdoor fireplace is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. The sun fills the generous suite, with its big comfy bed, underfloor heating & a private bath with views through an open window to the vineyard below.
